If the claims are denied the medical coders could re-file appeals.  The coders could also act as educators; they will require the health care providers to use specific codes or coding system.  Another role of the medical coders is speaking on behalf of the health providers and patients on coverage and medical necessity issues. 


To have a firm grounding in coding one could do well if they would obtain a bachelor degree or a master's degree. However your papers are not proof of your proficiency.  Having strong grounding on anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology will propel you forward to the medical coding career.  A serious medical coder has a certificate in medical coding. The potential employers like individuals who have completed such a course. 


Becoming a member of some medical professionals you would be able to get certification that might work for you while looking for a job.
